Things to note when transplanting peach trees

Things to note when transplanting peach trees

1. Transplanting time

The best time to transplant peach trees is usually after the leaves fall. At this time, it enters a dormant period, transplanting will not affect its growth, and it has a higher survival rate. Transplanting can be done before germination in the second year. Transplanting after germination will consume a lot of nutrients, which will not only be difficult to recover but may also affect survival. Transplanting in winter should be done away from severe cold periods to prevent the plants from being frostbitten.

2. Select a site and dig a pit

Peach trees are suitable for planting in loose and fertile soil, and the soil should not be too sticky. If the terrain is low, water accumulation during the rainy season will be very unfavorable, so high ground is usually chosen. After choosing a location, dig a pit with a length and width of 1.2-1.5 meters and a depth of about 60-80 centimeters. The size of the pit depends mainly on the tree crown. The larger the tree crown, the bigger the pit.

3. Transplantation

Transplant the peach tree with the soil ball on its roots into the new pit. The sapling should be upright and centered. Then start filling the soil and compacting it, then water it enough to allow it to take root, and cover it with a layer of dry soil. If the temperature is low, you need to cover the surface with a layer of mulch to keep it warm and prevent the roots from being frostbitten.

4. Subsequent maintenance

Transplanted peach trees are prone to frostbite or pests. You can apply lime on the surface of the trunk to keep warm and repel insects. Remove weeds regularly to prevent them from reducing soil fertility. In addition, loosening the soil can effectively kill the larvae and increase the soil's drainage capacity.
