How many days does it take for wheat to germinate?

Wheat is an important food crop in China. It has strong adaptability and is widely cultivated. The annual cultivated area is nearly 300 million mu. So in the process of planting wheat, how many days does it take for the wheat seeds to germinate after being sown? Let’s learn more about it below.

How many days does it take for wheat to germinate?

The germination time of wheat is affected by many factors, including temperature, humidity, seed treatment and wheat variety. But usually under suitable environmental conditions, wheat seeds can germinate in about 7 to 10 days.

How to improve the germination rate of wheat seeds?

1. Seed selection

Select high-quality seeds, remove seeds that are insect-infested, diseased, shriveled and impurities, and pay attention to removing wild wheat grass seeds and degraded seeds to ensure seed quality. Wheat seeds with uniform and full grains are graded by size to avoid mixing of large and small seeds.

2. Drying seeds

10-15 days before sowing, spread the selected wheat seeds evenly on reed mats or waterproof cloth with a thickness of 5-7 cm, and dry them in the sun for 2-3 days, turning them over every 1 hour. Sun drying can kill the pathogens and pests in the seeds.

3. Seed mixing

Choose seed dressing agents reasonably according to the disease resistance, disease severity, climatic conditions and cultivation methods of local wheat varieties. For example, to prevent and control root rot and smut, you can choose agents such as fenpropimorph; to prevent and control aphids, you can choose agents such as imidacloprid or thiamethoxam.

4. Seed soaking

Soak the wheat seeds in warm water for 6-8 hours (the water temperature is about 50℃), then take out and dry them for later use. This can destroy some inhibitory substances in the seeds, promote the seeds' water absorption, and accelerate germination.

5. Planting seeds

When sowing, the appropriate sowing amount and sowing depth should be determined based on factors such as local climate, soil fertility and wheat variety characteristics. Generally speaking, the sowing amount should be calculated based on factors such as wheat yield per acre and thousand-grain weight of seeds. The sowing depth is generally 3-5 cm to ensure that the seeds can germinate and grow smoothly.

Generally speaking, under suitable conditions, wheat seeds only take about 7-10 days to germinate. However, through comprehensive measures such as seed selection, seed treatment, and optimized sowing, the germination speed and germination rate of wheat can be effectively improved, laying a solid foundation for high and stable wheat yields.
