Why doesn’t Clivia bloom?

Clivia is a favorite plant in many households, known for its elegant leaves and beautiful flowers. Typically, Clivia blooms in winter and mainly grows leaves in other seasons. However, some flower lovers have found that their Clivia seems to only grow leaves but not flowers. Let’s take a look at why Clivia doesn’t bloom.

1. Maturity

It usually takes 3 to 4 years for Clivia to bloom from sowing. The sign of maturity is that the trunk becomes strong and the number of leaves reaches more than 12. If the plant is still young or has just been planted, it may not yet be mature enough to bloom.

2. Lighting

Mature Clivia needs sufficient light to promote the formation of flower buds. Especially in autumn, the light intensity is moderate and will not damage the leaves. Make sure the plant gets enough light and is watered appropriately to avoid drying out of the roots and sunburn of the leaves.

3. Fertilization

Plants need sufficient phosphorus to bloom. If only nitrogen fertilizer is used for a long time, the plant may only grow leaves but not flowers. Starting in autumn, phosphorus-containing fertilizers such as potassium dihydrogen phosphate should be used 2 to 3 times a month to meet the nutritional needs of flowering.

4. Temperature difference

Clivia needs a certain temperature difference to bloom . For example, the temperature is kept between 10 and 15 degrees Celsius at night and between 20 and 25 degrees Celsius during the day. Such a temperature difference helps the differentiation of flower buds and the growth of flower stems.

In general, ensuring that the root system of Clivia is well developed is also the key to flowering. If the root system is not healthy, the plant may not bloom even if the above conditions are met.
