Winter management of peony

Winter management of peony

When caring for peonies in winter, you should control the frequency of watering and keep the soil slightly dry. No fertilizer is needed throughout the winter, and it is sufficient to apply fertilizer once throughout the season. Peonies have a certain degree of cold resistance and are not easily affected by the cold. However, if the peony is planted in the north and faces extremely low temperatures and strong winds, it needs to be moved indoors to prevent frost damage. Let’s learn about the wintering management methods of peonies.

1. Indoor care

When the temperature drops in winter, the peony should be moved indoors and the room temperature should be kept at around ten degrees to ensure normal growth of the peony. While caring for the peony indoors, you also need to make sure it gets the right amount of light to keep its leaves green and help it survive the winter.

2. Watering management

When caring for peonies indoors, the amount of watering needs to be properly controlled, because the evaporation rate of water slows down in winter and excessive watering may cause water accumulation. When watering, you can pour it directly into the soil or spray it on the plants to keep the environment moist.

3. Nutrient control

When caring for peonies indoors, you should apply fertilizer appropriately to support the growth of the plant, but be aware that the plant's growth rate slows down in the winter and its ability to absorb nutrients is correspondingly weakened. Therefore, it is recommended to use diluted fertilizers and avoid overfertilization.

4. Trim and adjust

When caring for potted peonies indoors, timely pruning will help the plant grow vigorously. When pruning, you should remove branches that are growing poorly or cannot grow normally to save nutrients for the plant. At the same time, cut off branches that are too long to adjust the growth direction and maintain the beauty of the plant.

In short, peonies like sunlight, especially in winter, when mild light is beneficial to their growth. Peonies can enjoy sunlight all day long, and the best location is a south-facing balcony where there is plenty of sunlight. Peonies can tolerate temperatures as low as minus thirty degrees Celsius.
