How to prune large-flowered geraniums, detailed explanation of time and shaping methods

1. How to trim

Trimming and pruning is a very complicated and important matter, but some people do not pay much attention to the pruning of geraniums, and often have some incorrect understandings. For example, some people think that they should wait until the shape is not good-looking before pruning, some people are reluctant to prune, and some people think that they don’t need to be pruned because they grow very straight and neat. However, it should be noted that a neat cut is required for rapid healing, especially for plants with thick stems that require a neater cut. It is best to disinfect the knives every time you cut. The wounds caused by pruning branches should be initially coated with wood ash, cigarette ash or plant wound healing water to prevent branch necrosis. When the branches are exposed to water, the nodes of the stems will turn black, and the condition will become more serious towards the bottom. This is because mold has formed. At this time, you should get more sunlight, otherwise it will eventually turn into rotten leaves.

2. Pruning time

1. Tools: Both scalpels and razors can be used for trimming. Try to choose sharp tools.

2. Time: Autumn. Because it is easier to resume growth in summer, plants have a certain self-protection system, so they are weaker after summer. To encourage it to grow new branches and buds, it needs appropriate pruning.

3. Key points: The pruning length is determined by observing the proportions of the mother plant. When pruning, you must pay attention to the height and try to keep it consistent. Cut off branches that are too thin or grow inwards. The cutting position should also be on the top of the stem, as close to the stem node as possible, otherwise half of the stem will rot or necrosis, sometimes even at the stem node. In addition, if you find that the branches below the pruning point are turning yellow, they must be broken off. If they are not treated, they will become necrotic.
