How to graft pepper trees

How to graft pepper trees

After the Sichuan pepper tree is grafted, its economic value will be relatively high. It is also an important woody oil and spice tree species. It has strong adaptability, but the Sichuan pepper tree likes water, and is not tolerant to waterlogging and is afraid of storms. Newly grafted Sichuan pepper trees are not suitable for planting on mountain tops, windy vents, and cold and shady areas in the mountains.

Grafting time of pepper tree

The time for grafting Sichuan pepper trees varies due to different climates in different places. Generally, branch grafting is done in late March to late April, and bud grafting is done in early August to early September. The external temperature, humidity, light, etc. at this time are suitable for the growth of Sichuan pepper trees after grafting.

Grafting technology of pepper tree

The most widely used methods of grafting Zanthoxylum bungeanum trees are: bud grafting, which uses buds as scions (buds); branch grafting, which uses a branch with one or several buds as scions. Branch grafting includes cleft grafting, cut grafting, etc.

1. Cleft grafting

Cleft grafting is suitable for thicker rootstocks. When grafting, choose 2-4 year old seedlings, saw them off at a relatively smooth part, and then use a grafting knife to flatten the cross section. Then take the scion, cut a knife on each side to make the lower end into a wedge shape, cut it with 2-3 buds, and then use a wooden wedge to prop open the cut of the rootstock and insert the scion.

2. Cutting

For grafting, choose a place with thick, smooth cortex and smooth texture, cut off the cross section of the rootstock, make an oblique cut on the back of the lower bud of the scion, and then insert the scion into the cut of the rootstock so that the cambium on both sides of the rootstock and scion are aligned and close.
