Can garlic be planted in December (when is the latest planting time in winter)

Garlic sowing time

Garlic is suitable for sowing from September to December , and the most suitable period is from early October to mid-November . Because it germinates early and is heat-resistant, garlic should be planted before early November and no later than mid-October.

Due to its poor heat resistance, soft bone garlic should be planted after mid-October when the temperature is low. Therefore, garlic can be planted in December , but the weather will be cold in December.

Such flowers, the high temperature environment of garlic in the later growth period will cause its stems and leaves to die prematurely, thus affecting its yield. But if it is a greenhouse, there will be no problem.

If garlic is sown too early in the early stage of high temperature, the germination will be slow and uneven, the growth will be slow, and the yield will be low. If it is sown too late, the stems and leaves will die prematurely due to the high temperature in the later stage of growth, and the yield will also be poor.

Garlic cultivation and management technology

Land preparation and sowing

Garlic needs loose soil, and before sowing, the soil must be tilled and thoroughly raked.

Then after applying the base fertilizer, mix it well with the soil and plant it at a height of 15 to 20 cm. The border is 60-120 cm wide and has 4-8 rows.

When sowing, insert the root (root part) of the garlic clove vertically into the soil 3 to 4 cm deep so that the top is flat on the soil surface. If it is too shallow, it will easily fall off after germination.

If it is too deep, it will not germinate. The planting density of row spacing is usually 15-20 cm, and the planting density of plant spacing is 8-10 cm.

Fertilization method

Garlic has a longer growing period and requires more fertilizer. During the growing period, sufficient nutrients and water should be provided to promote the full development of stems and leaves, and then high-quality garlic balls can be produced.

However, during the period of bulb hypertrophy, the growth of stems and leaves stops, and the nutrients in the stems and leaves are transferred back and used for garlic bulb hypertrophy, and no fertilization is needed.

For top dressing, green garlic planting should be divided into three times within 70 days after sowing to promote growth and early harvest. Garlic planting should also be divided into three to four times within 90 days.

irrigation

① Garlic fields on sandy loam should be irrigated every 5-7 days in the early growth stage, about 40 days after sowing.

② In the middle growth period, about 40-80 days after sowing, irrigation should be carried out every 10-15 days.

③ During the bulb hypertrophy period, about 80-140 days after planting, irrigation should be carried out approximately every 20 days, and irrigation should be stopped at maturity.

④The soil should be kept dry during harvest to avoid affecting the quality of the garlic bulbs.

Intercropping and weeding

We should intercrop and weed before topdressing. Tillage should not be too deep, and tillage should be stopped 70 days after sowing to avoid damage to the root system.

Gains

80 to 100 days after garlic sowing is the right time to harvest green garlic. It is too early to harvest. Although the quality is soft, the harvest is small.

If harvested too late, the stems and leaves will be more fibrous and of poor quality. Garlic bulbs are harvested about five months after planting, but earlier varieties or cold treatments that mature earlier can be harvested earlier.

When harvesting, one-third to two-thirds of the above-ground stems and leaves should be withered. And the garlic bulbs should be harvested when fully mature. When harvested too early, the dried garlic bulbs will become soft, lack luster, be of poor quality, and not last long.
