When is the best time to plant asparagus? What is the best month to sow asparagus seeds in the south?

Asparagus planting time

Asparagus is a perennial plant, mainly harvested in the current year, and harvested more than 2-3 times a year . The tender stems mainly rely on nutrients stored in the previous year to produce tender stems, and the effective utilization period is 4 to 10 years. As the rhizomes continue to produce new branches, the aboveground stems become thinner and thinner, and the yield and quality decrease year by year.

Asparagus is best planted in summer because asparagus seeds need high temperatures to germinate. If the temperature is low, germination will be slow or even non-existent.

Therefore, whether in the south or the north, summer is the best time to plant asparagus. If you want to plant asparagus outdoors, you can raise seedlings in April and May and plant them in July and August. If you want to plant asparagus in a greenhouse, you can also raise seedlings in August and September and plant them in October.

Asparagus planting time

1. Spring sowing

In spring, from March to April, small arch sheds are used for seedling raising . Seedling raising begins when the soil temperature rises above 10°C, usually from April to May. Seedlings are usually raised in nutrient pots or seedling trays, and the seedling age is 50-60 days.

Harvesting time: The greenhouse temperature is controlled at around 25℃. When it exceeds 30℃, ventilation and cooling should be started. When the outside temperature reaches above 20℃, the film can be removed and harvesting can begin when the tender stems reach 20-25 cm.

2. Growing asparagus in greenhouses

Sowing time: Seedlings are generally raised in August and September, transplanted in October , and harvested when the tender stems grow to 20-25 cm.

Harvest time: The harvest period is basically from mid-May every year. The asparagus is dark green, fresh and tender, neat and uniform, with tightly-fitting scales and straight stems. The asparagus grown in this way is harmless and of high quality. The quality is best when harvested between 9 and 11 am every day.
