Can rice be dried in the sun?

Rice cannot be dried in the sun. There is a saying in the countryside: " Don't dry the rice but the grain. You can't afford to lose money by drying the rice." It roughly means that the unhusked grain can be dried in the sun, but the processed rice cannot be exposed to the sun, as it will be a loss.

After threshing, the rice cannot be put in the sun to dry, because rice itself has a strong ability to absorb moisture. If the rice is exposed to the sun at this time, the moisture in the rice grains will lose balance, making it dry and dull.

What happens if rice is dried in the sun?

Unhulled grains can be exposed to the sun, but processed rice grains cannot be exposed to the sun. This is because drying rice under the sun will cause the quality of the rice to deteriorate.

1. Make the food unpalatable

Because after being exposed to the sun for a long time, the rice grains will lose the oily substances they contain, and the rice cooked will be very unpalatable . In addition, the aroma of new rice will disappear, and it will taste like rice that has been aged for many years, and the taste is particularly bad.

2. Easy to break

After being exposed to the sun, rice is particularly easy to break. If you sift it with a sieve, there will be a lot of broken rice, which means that part of the grain is lost invisibly. Therefore, experienced farmers think that this is a waste of grain and will say "I can't afford to lose money by drying rice"!

As the saying goes, "It is better to shed a thousand drops of sweat than to spoil a grain of rice." Drying rice in the sun will damage some of the grain, causing it to go to waste. Old farmers even say that "wasting grain is a sin."

How to store newly harvested rice

Once processed into rice, the maximum safe storage period is three months. If you want to store more rice at home, you can put it in the refrigerator to effectively extend the shelf life.

If you buy a small amount of rice at home and find that it has just been infested with worms, you can put it in the refrigerator for more than 24 hours to kill the rice worms, and then rinse the rice to remove the worms.
