How to plant chive seeds and when is the best time to plant them?

Sowing chive seeds

Chives can usually be planted in spring, summer and autumn . In most areas, chives are planted in spring . The planting period of chives can last for a long time, but the best planting time is generally around March to May each year.

When the temperature reaches 6-9°C, you can start preparing for planting. At that time, the soil has not yet been completely thawed, so the soil moisture content is still relatively high, and the seedling rate will be relatively high.

In addition, the weed seeds have not yet reached the time to germinate, so the growth rate of leeks after emergence will be faster, and the harm of weeds to leeks can be effectively reduced.

Leek seed planting methods and key points

When planting leek seeds, you can soak the seeds to germinate in order to accelerate germination. The seeds need to be dried for 1-2 days before processing. 1-2 days before sowing, the selected seeds should be placed in warm water at about 40℃ and stirred.

After taking them out, wash them clean and soak them in warm water at about 30℃ for about 8-10 hours. Then put the seeds in an environment with a temperature of 18-20℃ for germination. During the germination process, wash them 1-2 times a day. They will sprout in about 3-4 days. When 60% of the radicles are extended, they can be used for sowing.

Key points for sowing chive seeds

After the leek seeds are dried, in order to prevent the seeds from being eaten by insects, they need to be placed in containers such as bottles or sealed bags, and the containers should be stored in a cool, ventilated and dry place. Although the seeds are dried, they still have vitality, so the container cannot be completely sealed and airtight, otherwise the seeds will lose vitality due to the inability to breathe, resulting in failure to germinate.
