Celery planting time

The best time to plant celery in spring is February or March, while in summer it is best to plant it in June. In autumn, it is more appropriate to sow it in late July. In addition, due to the large difference in temperature and climate between the north and south, the suitable planting time is also different.

Celery planting methods and key points

1. Seed treatment

After the celery seeds are disinfected, put them in constant temperature water at 48°C and stir for 30 minutes. Take them out and soak them in cold water again for 24 hours. Take out the seeds, rinse them with clean water and drain them, wrap them with gauze, cover them with a wet towel, and place them in a place with a temperature of 18 to 20°C. Wait until the seeds are 30 to 50% white before sowing.

2. Seedbed preparation

The celery seedling bed should be selected in a field with good water and fertilizer retention properties, convenient drainage, fertile and loose soil, and apply decomposed organic fertilizer, carbendazim and nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium compound fertilizer. The field should be cultivated to make a ridge with a ditch width of 0.3 to 0.6 meters, a ridge width of 1 to 1.2 meters, and a ditch depth of 0.15 to 0.2 meters.

3. Sowing method

After watering the ridges thoroughly, sprinkle a thin layer of soil on the ridges. Evenly sow the celery seeds, cover with 0.5 to 0.6 cm of fine soil, and then add a thin layer of straw on top of the fine soil to retain moisture.

4. Thinning management

After the celery seedlings grow two true leaves, thin them out, keeping the distance between each seedling at 1 cm. After a period of time, when the seedlings grow more leaves, thin them out 1 to 2 times again, so that the distance between the seedlings reaches about 2 cm. Water them after thinning.

Notes on planting celery

When sowing celery in spring and winter, you can cover it with a layer of mulch to keep it warm, and remove it after the seedlings emerge. Increase ventilation when the temperature is high. In summer and autumn, you can cover the seedlings with a double layer of mesh to form a small arch shed to facilitate ventilation, cooling and rain protection.
