Time and method of cutting of bougainvillea

Bougainvillea cutting time

Bougainvillea can be propagated by cuttings all year round, but the survival rate is higher in spring, summer and autumn. The survival rate of cuttings in spring March and April is about 70%, and the survival rate of cuttings in summer May and June can reach more than 90%. Cuttings in winter are generally carried out in a greenhouse.

Bougainvillea cutting method

1. Preparation of cuttings

If the cuttings are done in spring, March or April, the cuttings are generally selected from annual branches with short and thick internodes. If the cuttings are done in summer, May or June, semi-lignified branches of the current year can be selected. Select branches with a length of about 8 to 10 cm as cuttings, cut the lower end into an oblique cut, and retain 2 to 3 leaves on the top.

2. Soil and cuttings

The substrate for the cutting bed is generally a mixture of coarse river sand, mountain soil, honeycomb coal ash, sandy soil, etc. in a ratio of 1:1:1:1. Add 0.1% carbendazim to disinfect the substrate for the cutting bed. Cover it with a film for 7-10 days to kill the bacteria. After the incision of the cuttings is air-dried, apply rooting powder on it and insert it into the soil. The cutting depth is generally 3-5 cm.

Maintenance of bougainvillea after cutting

After the bougainvillea cuttings are completed, it should be kept at 25-28 degrees Celsius and placed in a ventilated place. The soil in the pot should be kept moist and excessive watering should be avoided, otherwise it will cause root rot. No fertilizer is needed at this time, otherwise it will cause root damage to the bougainvillea and affect the survival rate.
