How to prune kumquats? Pruning time and method

Kumquat pruning time

Kumquat can be pruned three times a year, usually in spring and summer. During the growing period, the main work is to fix the trunk. During the fruiting period, the crown should be pruned. During the fruit harvest period, its height should be cut to less than 250 cm. During the aging period, it should be pruned back. This can reduce nutrient consumption, renew and strengthen the tree, and increase fruit yield and quality.

Kumquat pruning method

1. Pruning seedlings

Kumquat needs constant pruning during the growth process. When its seedlings grow to 30 cm, they need to be pruned appropriately, but do not prune them too heavily. Just cut off the long, weak, and dead branches. This will allow the seedlings to sprout new branches.

2. Pruning during the growing season

When the kumquat seedlings are formed, they also need to be properly pruned every year. In the spring of each year, the kumquats need to be properly pruned. At this time, the plants will have many diseased and old branches, which need to be cut off immediately to concentrate the nutrients in the soil and better provide nutrients to the plants.

3. Shaping and removing buds

Usually kumquats also need to be shaped and budded. When the kumquat is not yet fully formed, its side branches can be pruned, leaving only 4 to 5 side branches. And after each pruning during the growing season, the densely growing parts also need to be pruned, which can increase its ornamental value and enable it to bear delicious fruits.

4. Notes

Kumquats should be pruned moderately each time, otherwise it will inhibit the normal growth of the plant. Do not water after each pruning, otherwise it will easily cause the wound to rot. You can spray carbendazim on the wound to prevent it from rotting.
