Poplar planting conditions and where to plant

Poplar planting conditions

1. Lighting conditions

Poplar is a strong sun-loving tree that prefers an environment with plenty of sunlight and is not shade-tolerant. When planting, choose a sunny and wind-sheltered area to meet the growth needs of the poplar tree and enable it to thrive.

2. Temperature conditions

Poplars have a wide adaptability to temperature and are suitable for planting in areas with an annual average temperature of not less than 9.5 degrees. The average temperature during the growth period is 16.5 degrees. In addition, poplars can withstand short-term high temperatures of around 40 degrees.

3. Moisture conditions

Poplars are very water-hungry but are not water-tolerant. It is not suitable to plant poplars in sites where flowing water stays for more than 100 days during the growing period. They cannot be planted in heavy clay soils where the groundwater level is not less than 50 cm or less than 2 meters.

Poplar tree growth environment

Poplars prefer a cool, humid, sunny environment. They are not very demanding on soil and grow very fast in deep, fertile, moist loam or sandy loam. They are difficult to grow in arid, barren, low-lying, waterlogged saline-alkali land and sandy wasteland.

How to plant poplar trees

1. Planting time

It is recommended to cultivate poplar trees in mid-to-late February and mid-to-early March each year, because the temperature can be maintained above 5°C and the light is not strong at this time, which is conducive to increasing the rooting rate of poplar trees. Secondly, it is best to choose to plant poplar trees in the rainy season.

2. Choose the soil

Poplar trees are suitable for living in loose and breathable sandy soil. When planting poplar trees, you need to choose soil with good drainage, and apply phosphorus and potassium compound fertilizers to the soil to improve soil fertility. You also need to spray the soil with sterilizers so that the poplar trees can grow healthily.

3. Planting method

When planting poplar trees, you need to cut a disease-free branch of the current year from the mother plant, then soak the poplar tree in water for 20 to 30 minutes to allow it to absorb sufficient water. Then you can insert the poplar branches into the soil and cover them with a layer of plastic film to make the poplar tree grow more vigorously.

4. Maintenance and management

Since poplar trees have poor drought tolerance, if there is too little rainfall, the plants will lack nutrients, causing them to wither. Therefore, it is necessary to replenish water for the poplar trees in time during maintenance. It is best to use unpolluted well water or spring water, or you can dry tap water for 1 to 2 days before use.
