When and how to plant red okra

When and how to plant red okra

Planting time of red okra

Red okra prefers a warm environment and is not cold-resistant. It is usually sown around May in spring. In areas with lower temperatures, it is usually transplanted in spring and autumn, when the temperature and humidity are suitable for germination and later growth.

How to plant red okra

1. Site selection

Red okra has a well-developed root system and is adaptable to a wide range of soils. It can be planted in general soils, but if you want to increase its yield, it is best to provide soil that is deep, fertile, loose, rich in humus, and has good drainage.

2. Land preparation and ridge making

Before planting red okra, the soil should be plowed to remove all weed roots and overwintering insect eggs in the soil. Apply well-rotted farmyard manure when plowing the soil. Determine the sowing time according to local actual conditions and control the density of the field. The density in the planting area should not be too high, otherwise it will be detrimental to the growth of red okra.

3. Planting seeds

Before sowing red okra, soak the seeds in warm water at about 50 degrees for 25 hours. After taking them out, place them in an environment of about 28 degrees to germinate. After they turn white, you can sow them. Dig planting holes in the planting site, put three seeds in each planting hole, and then wait for the seeds to germinate.

Precautions for planting red okra

Red okra has a high yield and a long growth cycle. It consumes more water and fertilizer during the growth period. The first topdressing is done after the seedlings have grown, and then it is done again after entering the fruiting period to promote plant growth and increase fruit set rate and quality. At this time, mainly phosphorus and potassium fertilizers are applied. Red okra requires little water, so just water it during droughts to keep the soil moist.
