Autumn cucumber planting time

It is best to plant autumn cucumbers around August, and it can be planted later in the southern regions. At this time, the temperature slowly drops and the seedling stage can avoid the hot weather, so that the cucumber seedlings are protected from diseases and pests. Autumn is the most suitable season for the growth of autumn cucumbers.

Autumn cucumber planting method

1. Choose good varieties

Before planting autumn cucumbers, you must choose suitable varieties. You should choose varieties that are cold-resistant, waterlogging-resistant, disease-resistant, high-yielding, and have strong growth potential, such as Jinyou No. 1 and Yanbai Cucumber. Local varieties suitable for autumn cultivation in your area can also be selected.

2. Seed treatment

There are two ways to plant autumn cucumbers: direct seeding and seedling transplanting. Soak the seeds in warm water at about 55 degrees for 10 to 20 minutes in advance. Stir occasionally during this process, then cool down to about 28 degrees, soak the seeds for 5 to 6 hours, and germinate at 28 degrees. Generally, they will be ready in 15 hours.

3. Choose the soil

Autumn cucumbers have shallow roots and have certain requirements for the soil. They should be planted in sandy loam that is fertile, can retain fertilizer and water, and has convenient drainage and irrigation. The soil should be renovated in advance and well-rotted base fertilizer should be applied to improve the soil fertility.

4. Planting

Autumn cucumbers can be sown on demand. First cover the plant with film, then make holes at a spacing of 50 between plants and 27-40 cm between rows. Sow 2 to 3 seeds in each hole, and cover with a layer of 1 to 2 cm of soil. After covering with soil, water the seeds sufficiently. The temperature must be well controlled during the seedling stage.

Precautions for planting autumn cucumbers

After planting autumn cucumbers, we need to observe the growth of the seedlings and thin out the seedlings in time. When the seedlings have 3 to 4 true leaves, we need to transplant them. After transplanting, we need to apply nitrogen fertilizer. During the vine-growing period and the flowering and fruiting period, we need to apply phosphorus and potassium fertilizers heavily. Note that we need to apply fertilizer once after each harvest.
