How many years does it take for a coffee tree to bear fruit?

Introduction to Planting Coffee Trees

Coffee trees are suitable for planting in loose and fertile, volcanic, limestone or granite soils. They are planted in spring and autumn, and it takes about a month for the seedlings to germinate. They are sown in summer and the seedlings will germinate in July-October. Although there is heating in winter, the germination time will be very long. Their economic life is about 30 years.

Coffee trees are widely planted all over the world, including Yunnan, Hainan, Guangdong, Guangxi, Fujian, Taiwan, Sichuan and other regions in China. Common species of coffee trees are Arabica, Robusta, Liberica and Ethelsa.

Coffee trees bear fruit after several years of planting

It takes 5 years for a coffee tree to bear fruit, and it can continue to bear fruit for 15 years. The yield decreases as time goes by, so generally the tree will not be planted for more than 15 years.

Coffee trees prefer a warm environment, with a suitable growth temperature between 15-25 degrees and an annual rainfall of 1500-2000 mm. They also need to be planted in loose, fertile, well-drained soil containing volcanic ash. The most ideal altitude is 500-2000 meters.

Potted coffee tree with fruit

It takes three years for potted coffee to bloom, from February to May, and the flowers bloom continuously. After flowering, the fruits are green and do not require artificial pollination.

Why don't coffee trees bear fruit?

Coffee has strict requirements on the environment and cannot be grown in any environment. During its growth and development, it forms the habit of requiring calm wind, cool, diffuse light and humid environment. Coffee trees have specific requirements for the environment, temperature and soil, so unsuitable conditions can easily result in the coffee tree not bearing fruit.

Key points for coffee tree planting

Before sowing coffee, the germination rate of the seeds should be tested. In the selected plot, apply fertilizer and superphosphate, spread them evenly on the ground, plow, harrow and level the ground. Soak the seeds in 50-degree warm water for 12 hours. After they absorb water and expand, take them out, dry them and sow them.

Coffee is suitable for sowing during the Qingming to Guyu period when the temperature is stable at 15-20 degrees. If it is too early, the ground temperature is low and the seeds will easily rot. If it is too late, the seeds cannot mature, which will affect the yield and quality. Sprinkle the seeds evenly in the ditch and cover them with 3 cm of soil. The seeds will emerge in about 10 days.
