Camphor tree pruning

Pruning camphor trees can shape the tree into a beautiful shape. If it is not pruned in time, it will look messy, with long main branches, few leaves or low and clumped leaves, and poor ventilation and light transmittance. Timely pruning can make the tree shape majestic, upright, and beautiful, and reduce the occurrence of diseases and pests.

Camphor tree pruning time

First of all, you need to understand the species and growth characteristics of ancient camphor trees. For example, elm, Sophora japonica, walnut, willow, etc. should be pruned during the period when the hydraulic pressure in the tree body is the lowest, generally once every two years.

Camphor tree pruning method

1. Bud removal: After the camphor tree is transplanted, it will be pruned. Many tender buds and young shoots will sprout on the trunk and branches, affecting the growth of the tree. Excess tender buds can be pinched off in spring. After winter pruning, tender buds will sprout again in the spring of the following year. All buds should be removed before the branches and trunks become lignified.

2. Pruning: When the camphor tree grows to a certain length, it needs to be pruned back according to the shape of the seedling and the needs of its growth and development. Diseased and insect-infested branches, old branches, inner branches, competing branches, and overcrowded branches can be pruned away, and the cut must be smooth.

3. Shaping: Camphor trees should be pruned according to the overall shape. For trees with skewed crowns or irregular tree shapes, or uncoordinated growth of main branches or side branches, you can remove large branches and keep small ones, or shorten strong leading branches.

Camphor tree pruning precautions

The roots of camphor trees should be pruned in time to remove broken, dead and rotten roots. The crown should also be pruned. Generally, about half of all branches and leaves should be pruned to reduce the transpiration of the crown and the water loss of the entire tree. After each pruning, place the tree in a well-ventilated environment and keep it away from water.
