Can sunflowers be potted?

Sunflowers can be grown in pots with almost no difficulty, but it is best to use loose and fertile soil for planting. The plant is highly adaptable and can be grown in pots or in the ground.

If the height of the sunflower plant does not exceed one meter, you can use a flowerpot with a diameter of 20-25 cm. If it is larger, you need to use a pot with a diameter of about 40 cm. If properly maintained, it will bloom in the same year.

How to grow sunflower in pots

1. Soil

When planting sunflowers, you need soil that has good drainage and is rich in organic matter. After planting, you should also loosen the soil regularly to increase the air permeability of the soil.

2. Pruning

The flowers of sunflowers are the most ornamental part, so during the growth period, it is necessary to trim off the excess side buds in time, and to pinch the tips during the seedling stage to promote the branching of the plant.

3. Fertilization

Sunflowers should be fertilized mainly with nitrogen fertilizers during the seedling stage. After buds appear, some phosphorus and potassium fertilizers can be added. This can promote the development of flower buds and facilitate later flowering.

4. Moisture

Sunflower has a well-developed root system and is drought-resistant, but it cannot lack water during its growth. The plant needs sufficient water to bloom and bear fruit and to ensure the quality of the flowers.

5. Temperature

Sunflowers are not very demanding on temperature, the more suitable germination temperature is 31-37℃, and the maximum cannot exceed 44℃. The plant is not cold-resistant, and the minimum growth temperature is 5-10℃.
