Methods and precautions for propagation of Chinese evergreen by cuttings

How to propagate Chinese evergreen by cuttings

Peperomia can be propagated by cuttings in spring, summer and autumn. The best time for cuttings is April to May, when the temperature is stable and the climate is comfortable, which is conducive to the survival of cuttings. In winter, the plant will enter a dormant period, and it is difficult for cuttings to survive at this time, so it is not suitable to propagate Peperomia by cuttings in winter. The specific cutting propagation method of Peperomia is as follows:

1. Cutting selection

When propagating Chinese evergreen, leaves are usually used as cuttings. You can choose round, large and thick leaves for cuttings. Leaf cuttings are relatively flexible and the survival rate of cuttings is relatively high.

2. Cutting method

There are two methods of cuttings: sand cuttings and hydroponic cuttings. When using sand cuttings, clean the sand, expose it to the sun for 2 days for sterilization, then put it into a small flowerpot and spray water to wet the sand. When using hydroponic cuttings, use a transparent vase filled with two-thirds of pure water. If it is tap water, let it stand for 1 day in advance.

3. Cuttings and potting

If you are doing sand cuttings, you can insert the leaves into the sand, or you can use chopsticks to poke a small hole and put the leaves into the hole. Water again after cuttings to ensure the humidity of the sand. When doing hydroponic cuttings, take a small piece of foam, make a small hole, place it on the water surface, and then pass the leaf stalk of the evergreen through the foam and immerse it in the water.

Precautions for cuttings of Chinese evergreen

After cuttings of Chinese evergreen, it is best to keep it in a semi-shaded environment, with the temperature maintained between 20-30℃. If sand cuttings are used, it is necessary to spray clean water frequently to keep the substrate moist. If hydroponic cuttings are used, the water needs to be changed according to the water quality. If the water is clear, do not change the water. If the water becomes turbid, change the water in time.
