How to change the soil and pot of bonsai

Time to change the soil and pot of bonsai

Generally speaking, bonsai can be repotted in spring and autumn every year. Spring is usually from late February to late April, and autumn is preferably from mid-October to mid-November.

The role of changing soil and pots for bonsai

The reason for changing the soil and pots during bonsai planting is that the plants grow in limited potting soil. After a certain period of time, the fertility is exhausted, the soil layer becomes compacted, the root system is dense, and it is difficult for new roots to grow. Therefore, it is necessary to use a larger pot and fill it with new soil to ensure the normal growth of the bonsai.

When changing the soil and pots for bonsai, a certain humidity must be maintained, the air humidity should be very high, and the temperature should be around 25 degrees. Under such climatic conditions, the roots of bonsai can be completely exposed to the air when changing the soil and pots.

How to change the soil and pot of bonsai

1. Remove the pot

When changing the soil and pot of a bonsai, you need to stop watering for a week, then take the plant out of the old pot, being careful not to damage the root system of the plant.

2. Prepare the soil

It is best to use dry mud or river mud when replacing the soil for bonsai. Prepare dry mud or river mud before repotting and divide it into three types: coarse, medium and fine. The coarse mud is as big as a thumb. Pad the drainage holes with curved tiles and place coarse soil at the bottom of the pot to facilitate drainage and ventilation.

3. Planting

Before planting, you need to cut off some of the old fibrous roots, then place the bonsai in the appropriate position in the pot, put slightly finer soil around the roots of the stump, then cover the surface of the pot with coarse soil, compact the soil, and then water it twice with a watering can.

Maintenance of bonsai after soil replacement

1. Watering

After changing the soil of the bonsai, it needs to be watered every day, watered once in the morning and evening. It can also be watered on rainy days, but don't let it get wet in the rain. For smaller flower pots, you can cover the surface of the pot with a wet cloth to prevent water evaporation.

2. Fertilization

After changing the soil for bonsai, because it is in spring, which is the season when bonsai begins to grow rapidly, it is necessary to fertilize in time. Apply nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium granules to the potting soil, cover it with soil, and water it the next day.

3. Pruning

After changing the soil of the bonsai, you should tidy up the roots of the plant. Roots that are too thick and too long should be cut off. This can encourage the bonsai to grow better quality roots and increase the number of roots.

4. Lighting

After changing the soil of the bonsai, it is best to maintain it indoors. It should be placed in a place with strong indoor light. Use lights at night to increase the lighting time, and pay attention to timely ventilation and air exchange.
