Can hydrangeas be planted in the ground?

Hydrangeas can be planted in the ground in spring, summer and autumn. However, it is difficult for ground-planted plants in northern regions to survive the winter safely. Whether to plant them in the ground depends on the climate of the planting area.

Planting hydrangeas over the winter

Ground-planted hydrangeas are perennial plants, but they are afraid of cold and have poor cold resistance. When the temperature is too low, the plants need to be covered with plastic bags to keep them warm.

Planting hydrangeas in the ground for the summer

Although ground-planted hydrangeas like sunlight and have a certain degree of sun resistance, long-term exposure to the sun will cause the leaves to turn yellow, so it is best to build a sunshade for them in summer.

How to plant hydrangea in the ground

1. Choose the soil

Hydrangeas require loose, breathable and well-drained soil. After determining the planting location, the soil needs to be carefully plowed and deeply turned, and an appropriate amount of organic fertilizer should be applied as base fertilizer.

2. Planting

Dig a hole according to the size of the plant, place the plant in it, then fill it with soil and compact it. Water the soil thoroughly once to promote rooting of the plant.

Precautions for planting hydrangeas in the ground

Ground-planted hydrangeas need to be topped twice during their growing season to control the height of the plant and promote the growth of new branches. In autumn, the tops of the new shoots should be cut off to allow the plant to survive the winter smoothly.
