How to prune a dragon fruit tree

When to prune dragon fruit trees

Dragon fruit is mainly pruned twice a year, once in spring and once after autumn. The temperature in these two seasons is very suitable for wound healing and allows it to grow quickly.

Cuttings: Use dragon fruit branches as cuttings. Place the branches in a cool place for a week. When the wound is completely healed, insert one-third of the seedling into the medium, and then water the soil to make it completely wet. After cuttings, place the flower pot in an environment of about 20℃. Generally, it will take about a month to take root and sprout.

Dragon fruit tree pruning

During the pitaya seedling period, when the plant grows to a height of 10 cm, the plant should be properly pinched. A sharp knife should be used to cut the top of the plant flatly, and the wound must also be smooth.

Before the pitaya grows to 1.5 meters in height, remove the side buds and leave only the top bud. Prune it about once every two weeks. If the top bud does not grow well, choose the best bud and cut off all the seedlings above it.

After the pitaya blooms and bears fruit, the side branches that bear fruit should be selectively pruned to preserve the fruit. The side branches must be pruned to the roots. If there are too many branches that do not bear fruit, some of them must be selectively pruned to ensure the supply of nutrients to the fruit.

Dragon Fruit Tree Pruning Tips

When pruning dragon fruit, it is necessary to pinch the top, trim the long branches and help the plant grow quickly so that it can bloom and bear fruit quickly.

If you want the dragon fruit to grow faster, you need to pinch or top it. This will not only promote the germination of side buds, but also promote top branching, making it grow faster.

Dragon fruit tree pruning and flowering

Some branches on the pitaya plant are particularly long, which can easily rob the plant of nutrients and affect its fruiting. They need to be pruned immediately, and appropriate thinning should be done when the flower buds are differentiating to promote better flowering.

Dragon fruit tree pruning results

If you want the pitaya to produce more fruits after pruning, you need to cut off the branches that have borne fruits and are hanging vertically. This will save nutrients and ensure next year's fruit yield.

Dragon fruit tree pruning precautions

When pruning dragon fruit, you need to prepare gardening gloves and special gardening scissors. When pruning, all tools should be disinfected with alcohol. Under the sunlight on a sunny day, the wound will heal easily. In addition, pruning, bud thinning, flower thinning and fruit thinning should be done in time to prevent excessive consumption of nutrients before operating.
