How to prune figs

When to prune figs

Fig pruning is best done in early spring, when the temperature and humidity are ideal, new leaves are beginning to grow, and the plant recovers quickly after pruning.

Cuttings: Cut the branches to a length of 8 cm, leaving more than two buds on each small branch, soak them in clean water, put them in a sealed bag in a light-proof and heat-insulating box for germination. You can wash them once or twice in the middle. They will germinate normally in one month, and white roots and milky roots will appear at the bottom. At this time, you can start cuttings.

Fig pruning

1. When pruning figs, dense branches, long branches, and dead branches should be removed. Appropriate pruning can also be done after the leaves fall. Pruning at this time is mainly for wintering, and diseased branches must be removed.

2. Potted figs should not be too high, preferably 30 cm high. Pruning should be done in March. When the seedlings grow to a height of 40 to 50 cm, top them in time.

Fig Pruning Tips

Fig pruning is best done in March. When the lower axillary buds grow to 3 cm, leave only the top 3 to 5 buds as the main branches and remove the rest.

In winter, more than half of the branches of figs can be cut off to make the whole shape more compact, promote the growth of branches, and help produce a variety of fruits. If crossed branches appear, they must be cut off so that sunlight can pass better.

Fig pruning flowering

If you want figs to bloom, different pruning methods should be used. According to the principle of selecting the best, you must remove dense branches and thin branches. This can reduce nutrient consumption and promote rapid flowering.

Fig pruning results

Pruning fig trees will help increase production, but only winter pruning can achieve a greater increase in production. Fig branches grow vigorously, and if the branches are not pruned in summer, the growth will consume nutrients and affect secondary fruiting, so attention should also be paid to pruning in summer.

Fig pruning precautions

Every time you find dead or diseased branches of figs, you must cut them off in time. This is a maintenance pruning to ensure the healthy growth of branches and leaves. In addition to this, some specific pruning is also needed to ensure that the figs produce more fruits.
