Sweet potato planting and harvesting time

Sweet potato planting time

Except for the beginning of summer, sweet potatoes can be planted in basically any other solar terms. The best planting time is between April 20th and May 10th. They can also be planted from June 10th to 20th. Be careful to avoid continuous rainy weather when planting, otherwise the yield of sweet potatoes will be reduced.

Sweet potato harvest time

Sweet potatoes are planted in April and May. If the temperature is controlled above 15 degrees after planting, they can be harvested around August and September. If they are planted in mid-June, they can be harvested around September and October.

Key points for high-yield planting of sweet potatoes

1. Land preparation and fertilization

Sweet potatoes are suitable for planting in sandy loam with deep soil, loose, fertile and good drainage. Usually, the soil can be deep plowed before planting to a depth of 20-25 cm, and 5,000 kg of manure and 25-50 kg of compound fertilizer can be applied per mu of land.

2. Sowing and seedling raising

Sweet potatoes need to be germinated before sowing. Soak the plump seeds in clean water for 10-12 hours, take them out and place them on a moist paper towel. Sow them after most of the seeds turn white. Sow the seeds in the ground, with 1-2 seeds in each hole.

3. Post-planting management

After the sweet potato seedlings grow out, they need to be thinned out and supplemented. When the sweet potatoes are all grown, they can be applied with manure and water. When the soil is slightly dry, inter-row cultivation and weeding should be carried out. When the main vine of the sweet potato has 18-24 leaves, the plant should be topped and pinched. During the growth period of the sweet potato, the side vines should also be removed, leaving only the main vine. Sweet potatoes can usually be harvested 5-6 months after sowing.
