Sugarcane growing environment and local conditions

Sugarcane growing environment and conditions

Sugarcane is mainly distributed between 30 degrees south latitude and 33 degrees north latitude, and the best planting location is between 25 degrees north and south latitude. It is widely planted in Taiwan, Fujian, Guangdong, Hainan, Guangxi, Sichuan, Yunnan and other regions in China.

Sugarcane growing conditions

Sugarcane is a thermophilic and light-loving crop. It needs an annual accumulated temperature of 5500-8500 degrees, a frost-free period of more than 330 days, air humidity of about 60%, annual precipitation of about 1000 mm, and sunshine hours of 1100-1200 hours.

Sugarcane growing temperature

Sugarcane is generally concentrated in the mid-subtropical, south subtropical and tropical monsoon climate zones. It prefers a warm environment with an accumulated temperature of more than 5,000 degrees. The temperature must not be lower than minus 2 degrees, and it can tolerate temperatures as low as minus 8 degrees.

Sugarcane growth process

There are two sowing times for sugarcane. The main one is sowing in spring from the end of January to mid-March, and harvesting from May to mid-July. It can also be sown in autumn from the end of August to the end of September, and harvesting in mid-December.

The growth process of sugarcane includes the germination period, seedling period, tillering period, elongation period and process maturity period. When sugarcane is sown, sprouts will emerge from the soil. This period is called the germination period. If sown in winter, the temperature is lower and it takes 70-110 days for the sprouts to germinate. If sown in autumn, the temperature is higher and the germination period is only 15-20 days.

The period from when the sugarcane buds emerge from the soil to when they grow 6-7 true leaves is called the seedling stage. When the seedlings grow 6-7 true leaves and new buds sprout at their base, it is called tillering. When the sugarcane has 12-13 leaves, they begin to joint and elongate, which is called the elongation period. At this time, the plant grows 50-100 cm per month.
