The growth environment and local conditions of Podocarpus

Podocarpus growth environment and conditions

Podocarpus is native to Yunnan, my country, and is now cultivated in various places. It is relatively shade-tolerant and prefers to grow in a warm, humid, well-drained environment. It has weak cold resistance and needs extra cold protection in the north. Podocarpus is produced in Jiangsu, Zhejiang, Fujian, Anhui, Jiangxi, Hunan, Sichuan, Yunnan, Guizhou, Guangxi, Guangdong and other provinces in China, and is also distributed in Japan.

Podocarpus growing conditions

Podocarpus is a sun-loving plant that can grow in strong light or relatively shady environments. It is suitable for planting in loose, fertile, well-drained, humus-rich slightly acidic culture soil. In alkaline soil, the leaves will turn yellow and the growth will be slow.

Podocarpus growth temperature

Podocarpus prefers a warm and humid environment. The suitable growth temperature is between 15-28 degrees. It is not cold-resistant and is easily damaged by frost in winter. It can overwinter outdoors in the south, but the northern region needs to strengthen measures to keep warm.

The growth process of Podocarpus

The growth process of Podocarpus includes the germination period, the growth period, the flowering period and the fruiting period. After the seeds are sown, they will germinate soon. If sufficient water and maintenance are provided, the growth will become faster and faster, the number of leaves will increase, and flower buds will sprout later. After flowering, fruits will be produced.

Planting time and method of Podocarpus

Podocarpus begins to be planted in spring from March to April. The seeds can be harvested and placed in a dry and ventilated place. They need to be soaked in water for about 4 days before sowing to allow them to fully absorb water. This will increase the germination rate. Generally, they will germinate after 40 days. After that, they can be thinned out and the dense seedlings can be transplanted with soil to vacant places.

Be careful not to water the new seedlings, so that the survival rate will be higher. When the seedlings grow to about 6 leaves, you can water them with some diluted water. Because the seedlings grow slowly, they can be transplanted after one year of maintenance, with a plant spacing of 20 cm and a row spacing of 20 cm. Transplant again after one year, with a plant spacing of 1 meter and a row spacing of 1 meter.
