What are the methods and precautions for growing nasturtium?

Nasturtium Introduction

Nasturtium is a plant of the genus Nasturtium. The plant is 30-70 cm tall, with pentagonal leaves, solitary flowers or cymes, petals and sepals of equal length and narrow strips. The main varieties include tuberous nasturtium, tricolor nasturtium, and beautiful nasturtium.

Nasturtium cultivation method

1. Soil

Nasturtium likes loose, fertile, organic-rich soil. The culture soil should be loam mixed with 4 parts of leaf mold, 4 parts of garden soil, 1 part of compost soil, and 1 part of sandy soil.

2. Watering

Nasturtium likes a humid environment, but is not tolerant to waterlogging. It can be watered in small amounts and multiple times during the growth period. Water it every 2-3 days in spring and autumn, water it in the morning and evening in summer, and spray water appropriately to maintain a high humidity.

3. Sunlight

Nasturtium likes plenty of sunlight and cannot tolerate exposure to the scorching sun or overly shady environments. It should be cultivated in a sunny place in spring and autumn, and appropriately shaded in summer. It should be moved to a sunny place indoors in mid-October for maintenance, and the position of the flower pot should be moved frequently to allow it to grow evenly.

4. Fertilization

When preparing nasturtium for potting, you need to mix some base fertilizer into the soil. Try to use well-rotted organic fertilizer, and don’t put too much fertilizer at one time, otherwise the root system of the nasturtium will easily have problems. Just use a small amount of fertilizer and the nasturtium will grow very lush.

5. Pruning

When nasturtium grows to a certain height, it needs to be topped to control the height of the plant. When the height of the plant is 15 to 20 cm higher than the potting soil, a frame needs to be built and the vines need to be tied to the prepared frame to allow it to grow upward.

Precautions for growing nasturtium

Nasturtium is a non-toxic plant. Its flowers emit a fragrance. The young shoots, buds and fresh seeds can be processed into spices, but the taste is strong and spicy, so it needs to be consumed with caution.
