What are the cultivation methods and precautions of Hosta

How to grow Hosta

Hosta is a perennial plant of the Liliaceae family and the Hosta genus. It is mostly propagated by division and sowing. It prefers a shady and humid environment and cannot withstand strong light. It likes fertile and moist sandy loam. It is extremely cold-resistant and can overwinter in the open field in most parts of China.

When cultivating hosta, you should use flower soil with good air permeability, good drainage and strong fertility for cultivation. It is usually recommended to place it in a place with scattered light and control the temperature at around 20°C. It is recommended to keep the temperature above 5°C in winter. When the soil is dry, water should be added immediately.

Watering method

When caring for the hosta, water it every 3-4 days to provide it with enough water, but be sure to increase the watering frequency appropriately in the summer, about once every 2-3 days, and reduce the watering frequency appropriately in the winter, once every 7-10 days.

Fertilization method

During the growing season of Hosta, it is enough to apply fertilizer 1-2 times a month. In addition, before it blooms, you can also apply phosphorus and potassium fertilizers several times, which is very beneficial for its flowering.

Pruning methods

If you do not need the hosta to bear fruit after it blooms, you can cut off the remaining flowers. In autumn and winter, the top of the plant withers and enters a dormant period. At this time, this part should be cut off to avoid nutrient consumption.

Precautions for Hosta cultivation

During the maintenance process of the hosta, try not to expose it to direct sunlight. If it is exposed to the sun for a long time, the branches and leaves will easily turn yellow. During the growth process, apply well-rotted thin fertilizer 2-3 times, so that it can grow strong and vigorous, and it can bloom in late summer and early autumn.
