How to propagate blueberries and what to pay attention to

How to Propagate Blueberries

There are two main methods for blueberry propagation: cutting propagation and layering propagation. Its seeds can also be propagated, and its natural way of reproduction is seed propagation. Generally speaking, cutting propagation is the fastest.

Blueberry breeding time

It is generally more appropriate to propagate blueberries in the summer. The plants grow vigorously in this season, can take root quickly after propagation, and have a high survival rate.

Blueberry propagation method

Propagation of blueberry by division

First, separate the blueberries from the soil and shake off the dirt at the roots. Then use scissors to cut off the underground stems connecting the leaves, divide them into several plants, and then plant them.

Blueberry cutting propagation

1. Seedbed: Prepare the seedbed first. Make sure it is loose and has strong drainage capacity. It is recommended to use river sand, peat soil and other materials as the substrate soil. The substrate must be exposed to the sun and disinfected before use.

2. Cuttings: Prepare a healthy mother plant and cut one-year-old thick and mature branches from it as cuttings, about 20 cm in length.

3. Cuttings: Use the oblique insertion method when cutting, and do not insert too deep. The depth should be about 2/3 of the cuttings. After insertion, compact the soil around the cuttings, then water it thoroughly once. Pay attention to heat preservation and moisture retention in the later stage.

Blueberry seed propagation

Prepare a bottle with a depth equal to the width of your palm, put in fresh and moist sphagnum moss, sprinkle the seeds evenly on the sphagnum moss, put plastic wrap on the box to maintain humidity, and make a few small holes in the plastic wrap. It will take about 20 days for the seeds to germinate.

Notes on blueberry breeding

1. Water management: After blueberry cutting propagation, you need to pay attention to watering frequently to maintain a certain humidity in the soil, but avoid over-watering or under-watering.

2. Fertilizer management: Do not apply fertilizer before the blueberry cuttings take root after propagation. Fertilizer can only be applied after the cuttings take root to promote the growth of the plant.
