How to propagate figs and what to pay attention to

Fig propagation method

Common ways of propagating figs include cuttings, division, layering, etc. It can also be propagated by seeds, and its natural way of reproduction is seed propagation, but cuttings are still the fastest way to propagate.

Fig breeding time

Figs generally have a higher survival rate when propagated in March and April in spring and September and October in autumn, because the climate in these two seasons is relatively mild and the propagated plants can take root as soon as possible.

Fig propagation method

Fig propagation by division

Division propagation is generally carried out between February and March. When carrying out division propagation, dig up the soil at the roots of the fig, cut and dig out the root seedlings together with the roots, and then plant the roots directly in the soil.

Fig cutting propagation

Cutting propagation is generally carried out in mid-to-late March of the year. Before cutting, select one to three years old strong branches that have not sprouted, cut off the branches, the length of which should be generally 30-50 cm, insert the cuttings obliquely into the soil, about 2/3 of the way in, fill the soil, water it, and keep the soil moist.

Fig propagation precautions

If figs are propagated by layering, what you need to pay attention to is to lower the stronger branches in spring and cover them with soil. After a certain period of time, roots will grow and then they can be transplanted.

In addition, if figs are propagated by cuttings, it is important to note that the branches should be soaked in carbendazim before cutting, which can increase the survival rate.
