How to grow indoor peonies and what to pay attention to

Peony growth habits

Peony likes a cool, sunny environment and avoids high temperature and stuffiness. It is suitable for planting in loose, fertile, well-drained sandy soil. It likes sunlight very much, but cannot be exposed to the scorching sun. It can be kept in a sunny place in spring and autumn, shaded in summer, and full sun in winter. The suitable growth temperature is 17-20℃.

How to grow peonies indoors

It is best to plant indoor peonies in fertile, well-drained sandy soil. The soil can be sterilized with carbendazim first. Keep the soil moist during the growth period. Water sufficiently before and after flowering. Water in the morning and evening in summer. Do not add fertilizer to new plants within half a year. Fertilizer can be added before and after flowering. Add fertilizer and water before winter. Provide sufficient light at ordinary times and avoid direct sunlight.

Watering Peonies Indoors

Indoor peonies cannot tolerate waterlogging environments, so do not water them too much. Each watering should be based on weather conditions and the condition of the potting soil. In dry climates, you can water them appropriately, but the potting soil should be dry rather than wet. In rainy seasons or cloudy days, be careful not to allow water to accumulate in the pot to avoid damaging the plant.

Fertilizing Peonies Indoors

Indoor peony is a fertilizer-loving plant. During the growth period, apply compound fertilizer once every half a month or so. Pay attention to applying thin fertilizers frequently and do not use concentrated fertilizers. If the plant is newly planted, stop fertilizing to prevent the fleshy roots from getting moldy and rotting. Liquid fertilizer can be applied 1-2 times before flowering.

Peony Pruning

After the indoor peony blooms, you can trim off the remaining flowers and remove all the withered leaves to reduce nutrient consumption. In winter, you can trim the overlapping branches, crossed branches, and diseased and insect-infested branches. Thin branches can be cut short, and overgrown branches can be cut short. During the spring budding period, keep 2-3 tender buds on the top and remove the rest.

Matters Needing Attention in Indoor Care of Peonies

Peonies prefer an environment with plenty of sunlight. If they are grown indoors, it is best to place them on a sunny balcony. The maintenance environment should not be too dark. In addition, if the temperature is low in winter, it is best to move them to a well-lit place indoors and maintain them in full sunlight. This can increase the temperature of the plant itself and help it survive the winter better.
