Do succulents need sun protection on cloudy days in summer?

A cloudy day does not mean there is no ultraviolet light, it just means the intensity level of ultraviolet light is low and sunburn is less likely to occur.

   Therefore, on cloudy days during the hot summer period, if you lift the shade net, you must maintain good ventilation. It is also best to keep the potting soil dry to avoid high temperature and high humidity at the same time, which is basically safe.

There are two main ways to protect succulents from the sun in summer

(1) Choose a suitable breeding environment

If you don't have many succulents, it's better to choose a cool, ventilated, diffuse light environment to allow the succulents to survive the summer instead of installing a sunscreen net. Any environment can be placed without prolonged direct sunlight and good ventilation, such as a north balcony, windowsill, or shaded area in the courtyard.

   During the summer, succulents are in a dormant or semi-dormant state. Controlling watering and keeping the soil in the pots dry are beneficial in preventing fading, excessive growth, black rot, and waterlogging.

(2) Install a suitable sunshade net

For succulents with a large number of plants, or those grown on outdoor balconies or outdoors, it is necessary to install a suitable sunshade net, which can not only effectively protect the succulents but also avoid the hassle of moving them in and out.

However, it should be noted that sunshade nets are divided into different densities. Different densities have different shading rates. Generally, a sunshade net with a density of 3 needles or a shading rate of about 55% can be selected for shading flowers and plants in summer.

In the southern cities with hot stoves, you can also choose 4-pin and 70% shading rate ones, but the denser the density, the worse the ventilation effect. When installing, you should pay attention to install it as flat as possible and reserve ventilation holes.

This is how you can treat succulents when they are sunburned in summer

When succulents are sunburned in the summer, do not spray water to remedy the situation. Instead, move them to a cool and ventilated place to cool down, then treat them according to the severity of the sunburn. For severe sunburn, remove some particularly burnt leaves or cut off the heads.

Mild sunburn will basically not affect the survival of the plant except for a few sunburn spots. Moreover, the sunburned leaves can be consumed during the later growth and metabolism.
