How many days does it usually take for green onions to germinate?

Shallot seeds are very small and light, so uneven density is likely to occur when sowing. Furthermore, due to the special structure of chive seeds, they can easily lose their activity, so problems such as slow germination and few roots are likely to occur. So how many days does it usually take for green onions to germinate? Let’s learn more about it below.

How many days does it usually take for green onions to germinate?

It usually takes 5-10 days for shallots to germinate from sowing, but the specific time will be affected by factors such as temperature and soil moisture. If the seeds are soaked and germinated before sowing, the germination time can be shortened and they will germinate in about 3-4 days.

How to improve the germination rate of shallot seeds ?

1. Seed selection

Choose new seeds that are plump, free of pests and diseases, and avoid using old seeds, as the germination rate of old seeds will be significantly reduced.

2. Seed pretreatment

(1) Turn the seeds over and dry them 2-3 days before sowing, and use ultraviolet rays to sterilize them and increase seed activity.

(2) Soak the seeds in clean water at room temperature for 4-6 hours, then stir and soak them in hot water at 50-53 degrees for about 20 minutes to promote the seeds to absorb water.

(3) Use potassium permanganate or other solutions to disinfect seeds for a short period of time. Note that seeds should not be soaked in water again after disinfection.

3. Germination operation

Place the soaked seeds on a moistened paper towel or gauze, put them in a sealed bag, and place them in a warm place (about 20-25°C) for germination. When about half of the seeds turn white, you can start sowing.

4. Sow seeds correctly

When sowing, it is recommended to adopt the method of high ridges and film covering, and the depth of the sowing furrow should be controlled at 2-3 cm, and the furrow distance should be about 10-15 cm. Water the soil thoroughly before sowing, and then sow after the water has penetrated. After sowing, cover the seeds with wood ash or fine dry soil, about 1.5 cm thick.

5. Environmental control

(1) Temperature: The suitable temperature for shallot seeds to germinate is between 18-25℃.

(2) Humidity: Keep the soil moist, but avoid water accumulation. Use a watering can to water the plants to maintain soil moisture.

(3) Light: Scallions need plenty of sunlight, but may need appropriate shade in hot seasons.

In general, the germination time of shallots is usually around 5-10 days, but the specific time will be affected by temperature, soil moisture and light conditions. After germination, under good growth conditions, it will take about 2 to 3 weeks for the seedlings to grow large enough. At this time, they can be transplanted in time and subsequent field management work can be carried out.
