What are the types of violets?

Horticultural varieties

There are many horticultural varieties of violets, including single-petal and double-petal varieties. The double-petal varieties have high ornamental value; the single-petal varieties can produce seeds, while the double-petal varieties cannot. Generally speaking, plants grown from flat seeds can usually produce a large number of double flowers, while plants grown from plump and full seeds mostly produce plants with single flowers. The flower colors include pink, dark red, light purple, dark purple, pure white, light yellow, bright yellow, blue-purple, etc. In production, white, pink and purple flower varieties are generally used to produce cut flowers.

Cultivated varieties

The main cultivated varieties of violets include white "Aida", light yellow "Carmen", red "Francesca", purple "Abella" and lavender "Inkana".

Classification by plant height

Violets can be divided into three varieties according to plant height: tall, medium and short. All varieties can be planted in pots; medium and short varieties are used for flower beds, usually with a plant height of 30-40 cm; tall varieties are used for cut flowers, usually with a plant height of 60-90 cm.

Classification by flowering period

Violets are divided into summer violets, autumn violets and winter violets according to their flowering periods; they are divided into annual and biennial types according to their cultivation habits. Violets have single or double petals, rich and bright colors, and are fragrant. The flowering period of violets varies depending on the variety and can be divided into the following three types:

Spring violets

Spring violets. The flowering period is April-May.

Summer Violets

Summer violets. The flowering period is from June to August. It can be divided into three types: short, medium and tall. The growing period is 100 to 150 days. It is a typical annual flower.

Autumn violets

Autumn violets. The flowering period is from July to September. The plant is of intermediate type.
