How to plant dahlia bulbs

1. Germination

The tuberous roots of dahlias need to be germinated before planting. In early spring, usually in March or April, take the bulbs out of the storage environment, trim off the damaged and dead parts, and then bury them in moist fine sand. Place it in a germination room with a constant environment or place it in a warm corner. The light does not need to be too strong. After about 5-7 days, you can clearly see buds sprouting from the rhizomes.

Depending on the germination situation, if the tubers are small, you can plant them directly. If the tubers are large, you can use a sharp knife or scissors to cut the tubers to achieve the purpose of reproduction.

2. Cultivation

Dahlias that have been germinated can be cultivated normally, either in pots or in the ground. Whether it is potted or planted in the ground, there must be enough space for it to grow. Generally speaking, the potted plant should be at least 20 cm in diameter.

The planting hole for ground planting should not be less than 20 cm. The soil should be loose, fertile and well-breathable loam. When planting, pay attention to placing the buds on the upper part so that it can grow more normally.

3. Fertilizer

In order to meet the dahlia's demand for fertilizer, you can put a certain amount of decomposed organic fertilizer in the planting hole or at the bottom of the flowerpot as base fertilizer.

4. Establishing pillars

When planting, because its branches are relatively high, some varieties, especially giant and large flower shapes, have heavy flower heads, so it is necessary to bury a support pillar about five or six centimeters deep on one side of the planted bulb. Then, when it is about to bloom, tie the plant to the pillar to prevent it from falling over.

The dahlia support must be buried before the bulbs are planted, because when the support is needed later and the support is nailed in, its root system may be too large and cause damage to the root system. This is a problem that needs to be paid attention to during its growth. After planting, water thoroughly twice and then switch to normal water and fertilizer management.
