How to divide the lateral buds of succulent plants

How to divide the lateral buds of succulent plants

1. Observe the lateral buds

The side buds of succulents are divided into those with their own root systems and those without roots that grow at the bottom of the rhizome. Only those with root systems are called divisions, while those without root systems are called bud cuttings.

2. Separation of lateral buds

Rooted lateral buds: Pull up the rooted lateral buds, taking the soil with them, and carefully separate the lateral buds you want to divide from the mother column. Note that each lateral bud must have roots to ensure survival.

Rootless lateral buds: Break off the lateral buds directly from the stem or cut them off with a clean knife. There is no need to remove the succulents. Minimize damage to the mother column.

3. Transplantation

Just plant the separated side buds into the soil. It is best to let the wound dry before planting it into the soil to avoid infection. When planting rooted lateral shoots into the soil, be careful not to damage the roots. The number of pots can be increased according to the number of side buds.

4. Potting and Maintenance

After the side buds are potted, there is no need to rush to water them. Place them in a dark and cool place first to allow them to adapt to the new environment. Lateral buds with roots can adapt to the environment faster, while those without roots that are directly grafted can also take root in about a month.
