How to prune gardenia

How to prune gardenia

1. Pruning time

There are two time periods for pruning gardenias. One is in June and July. The purpose of pruning at this time is to concentrate nutrients, which is more conducive to the flowering of gardenias. The other time period is in December. The purpose of pruning during this period is to remove excess branches and leaves, stimulate the growth of normal branches and leaves, and inspire gardenias to grow new branches.

2. Pruning method

Pruning in June and July only requires removing excess and overly lush branches and leaves to concentrate nutrients and make room for healthy branches to grow in preparation for flowering. This will result in more flowers of better quality. In addition to removing dead flowers and branches, pruning in December also requires pinching the newly grown branches, that is, removing the leaves at the top, in order to make it grow more vigorously and have a more balanced distribution of nutrients.

3. Notes

No matter when you prune, you must spray the plant with sterilizer afterwards, because the newly pruned gardenia is relatively weak, and pathogens can easily enter through the incision and affect the health of the plant. You can spray it with 1000 liquid Benomyl once. The purpose of doing this is to improve the immunity of the plant. Also, when watering, avoid the cuts to prevent infection. Try to choose water that has been dried in the sun for watering, because the chlorine in the water is removed after being washed out, and such water will not harm the gardenia.
