How to plant sweet potato seedlings to achieve high yield?

Sweet potato, also known as sweet potato and sweet potato, is a nutritious root food. It is easy to grow and manage, has strong adaptability, and is not picky about soil. Therefore, it is deeply favored by farmers. So how do you plant sweet potato seedlings to achieve high yields? Let’s learn more about it below.

1. Variety selection

Before you start planting sweet potato seedlings, you need to choose a sweet potato variety that is suitable for your local climate and soil conditions. The recommended high-yield varieties include Shangshu 19, Guangshu 87, Zhengshu 21, etc.

2. Prepare the Seedbed

Choose a sunny, well-drained site and prepare the seedbed. The soil in the seedbed should be loose, fertile and rich in organic matter.

3. Sowing and seedling raising

Sowing is usually done in spring when the soil temperature is stably above 15°C. When sowing, place the sweet potatoes flat on the seedbed, keep a certain distance between each sweet potato, and then cover them with a thin layer of soil.

4. Seedling management

After sowing, thin out and restock the seedlings in time, loosen the soil, weed and apply fertilizer. In addition, attention should be paid to timely watering during the seedling stage, especially when the soil is moist.

5. Pruning and cutting branches

In the growth process of sweet potato seedlings , pruning and branching are the key. Generally, newly grown branches are hung on the grid with ropes, leaving three or four branches about one meter away from the main trunk, and more branches more than one meter above the branch trunk. The dense branches and weak branches can be removed.

6. Pest and disease control

Check the status of sweet potato seedlings regularly and take appropriate measures immediately if any signs of diseases and pests are found. You can use biological pesticides or physical methods to prevent and control them, reducing the use of chemical agents.

7. Harvest and storage

It is usually harvested in autumn. The melon seedlings can be harvested when their leaves begin to turn yellow and the flesh of the underground part becomes hard. After harvest, sweet potatoes can be piled in a ventilated, dry place, or stored in an underground cellar.

In general, planting sweet potato seedlings is not too difficult. If you basically follow the above points, you can effectively improve the survival rate and final yield of sweet potato seedlings. However, specific planting steps and management measures need to be adjusted appropriately according to local climate conditions and soil conditions.
