How to prune bougainvillea?

1. Pruning during the seedling stage

For newly grafted bougainvillea, when the main branches grow to 20 to 30 cm long, they should be topped and the top leaves removed to eliminate apical dominance and promote the sprouting of side branches.

2. Pruning during the growing season

Bougainvillea grows vigorously in summer. It is necessary to cut off the overgrown branches, crossed branches, and messy branches to increase ventilation, maintain the original shape, and save nutrients.

3. Pruning after flowering

After flowering, promptly cut off the withered flowers, dead branches, weak branches and old branches. Cut off 1/2 of the aging branches and shorten the remaining branches, leaving only 2 to 3 buds on each branch.

The pruned branches of bougainvillea can be used for cuttings. Now Huahua will teach you how to take cuttings!

How to propagate bougainvillea by cuttings?

step

1. Branch selection: Choose semi-lignified mature branches, cut each section into 7~10cm long, and retain 3~5 leaves.

2. Soak: Mix 500 times diluted carbendazim with rooting powder to make a solution, put the cuttings in, soak for 3 to 5 hours, and then place in a cool and ventilated place to dry.

3. Soil preparation: Humus, vermiculite and river sand can be prepared in a ratio of 4:4:2 to prepare the cutting medium.

4. Cuttings: Bury the cuttings in the soil 3 to 5 cm deep, leaving the leaves exposed. Be careful not to leave the cuttings too close together.

5. Watering: After the cuttings are done, water them thoroughly once to keep the soil moist, then place the flowerpot in a ventilated and diffused light place for maintenance, and they will take root.

How to care for bougainvillea in summer?

1. Watering

Water the plants once in the morning and once in the evening every day. Water less frequently when there is continuous rainy weather. Clean up accumulated water in time after the rain to avoid root rot. Start controlling water from September, and wait until the leaves droop and the soil in the pot is completely dry before watering again. Avoid fertilizing during the period of controlling water.

2. Fertilization

May to July is the peak growing season. Diluted nitrogen fertilizer water should be applied every 7 days or so to promote the growth of branches and leaves. After August, in order to promote the budding of flower buds, decomposed chicken manure fertilizer should be applied every 10 days. During the flowering period from October to November, potassium dihydrogen phosphate solution should be applied once every half month.

3. Lighting

Bougainvillea likes light and needs more than 8 hours of light a day. Avoid scorching sun in summer. The more sun it gets at other times, the better it grows.

4. Pest and disease control

Bougainvillea is easily infected by aphids and dieback disease in summer. It is necessary to ventilate the plant more often. When the plant is found to be infected with pests and diseases, cut off the diseased branches and leaves immediately, and then spray some homemade chili water or tobacco water for prevention and control.

If the pests and diseases are serious, you have to spray some chemical agents. You can try Huahua’s insect killer, which is very effective.
