How to graft Viburnum

How to graft Viburnum

1. Material selection

This step is very important because it affects the flowering time after grafting. If it is a seedling, it will bloom after seven or eight years, but the waiting time is too long. However, if you choose adult branches with flower buds, then once they survive, they will bloom in the first year. Therefore, when choosing branches from the mother plant that can bloom, they are generally those that are closer to the periphery above the crown of the tree.

2. Soil selection

Although this plant has strong adaptability, it can be cultivated in general soil. However, the root system of plants grown in sandy soil will be more developed, so it is best for us to choose this kind of soil.

3. Time selection

Generally speaking, we will choose the early March, because this stage is when the buds sprout, and the temperature at this time is relatively suitable, neither too cold nor too hot.

4. Specific steps

Cut a section of about five centimeters in length from the selected branch, preferably the part with the terminal bud, and use the "high grafting" method to graft. Once completed, place it in a shaded environment or take appropriate shading measures. Once its leaves grow out, it can be exposed to sunlight.

5. Notes

Because there is a growth correlation between the main branches and offshoots of this plant, we should cut off the tops of the main branches after side branch grafting. Doing so can speed up the growth of the scion and allow it to enter the flowering period sooner.
