List of Metasequoia propagation methods

Seed propagation of Metasequoia

When the fruits of Metasequoia are ripe, they are collected and dried in the sun. After they are dry, the seeds are sieved out and stored in a dry place. Sowing is carried out in March in spring , using row sowing or broadcast sowing in the field. The soil should not be covered too thickly after sowing, and the soil should be kept moist at all times.

Metasequoia cutting propagation

Both hardwood cuttings and softwood cuttings can be used.

Metasequoia hardwood cuttings

In January , cut healthy branches from 2-3 year old mother trees as mother cuttings, usually about 15 cm. Carry out cuttings in early March . Insert the branches in sandy soil to achieve the effect of heat preservation, moisture retention and frost protection. Soaking in rooting powder solution for 1 day before cuttings can promote rooting. After cuttings, adopt full light seedling cultivation, water, weed and loosen the soil in time.

Metasequoia twig cuttings

Cuttings of Metasequoia glyptostroboides branches are usually carried out in late May . Choose semi-lignified young branches as cuttings, cut them into about 15 cm , retain the upper 4 to 5 pinnate leaves, and then insert them into the soil. Pay attention to shade after transplanting. In summer, you can replenish water by spraying. While keeping moist, also pay attention to ventilation to promote the early rooting of the cuttings.

Transplanting Metasequoia

Metasequoia can be transplanted from late autumn to early spring, and Metasequoia seedlings should be planted immediately to avoid excessive water loss. If long-distance transportation is required, the roots of the seedlings should be immediately immersed in water to replenish moisture after the plants arrive at their destination. When transplanting large seedlings, they must be brought along with the soil ball. After applying enough base fertilizer, fill in the fine soil and tamp it down. After planting, water it thoroughly.

Moderate pruning of Metasequoia

In order to create a ventilated and light-permeable growing environment for the plants, moderate pruning should be carried out after the forest is established. The best time to prune is after the leaves of Metasequoia fall and before the beginning of spring . The pruning intensity should be 1/4 to 1/3 of the total length of the crown.
