How to prune a juniper bonsai

Juniper bonsai pruning

When growing juniper, you need to trim its branches and leaves so that the whole plant will grow vigorously. Only when the plant grows vigorously can the shape be guaranteed.

The first step is to pick the buds. Picking buds from juniper can adjust the vigor of the entire plant and promote the growth of branches and leaves. Juniper plants grow vigorously, but not very evenly. Generally, the branches and leaves in the upper part are lush and the leaves are more concentrated, while the growth in the lower part is poor and there are fewer leaves. Therefore, you should pay attention to picking buds at this time. Picking buds is usually done during the growth period. You can directly pick the buds with your hands, or cut them off with scissors. It can be pruned at any time during the growing season.

The next step is to thin out the branches. Juniper can grow very large easily and grows relatively fast, but its branches can easily become messy. Except for the branches that are retained during shaping, the rest of the new and messy branches should be properly pruned so that the remaining branches can grow well.
