Cutting method of peony

Cutting method of peony

Cutting medium

The cutting medium should be sandy loam with a loose texture, good drainage, and rich in humus, with a pH value between 5 and 6. It is best to disinfect it with 0.1% potassium permanganate solution before use.

Cutting time

It is carried out from June to July every year. During this season, there is more rainfall, and the air and ground temperature are more suitable, so the survival rate is high.

Cutting method

Bud cuttings

When selecting branches of peony, pay attention to choosing those with full axillary buds. At the same time, be sure to cut off the inflorescence and cut it from the internodes. Take a branch about 2 cm long from each node as cuttings, appropriately remove some leaflets, and then insert it flat into the substrate about 5 cm deep, ensuring that the leaves are exposed above the soil surface, with a plant spacing of 5 cm × 10 cm.

Softwood cuttings

Select branches with full growth and development, cut off the inflorescence, cut into sections of 2 to 3 nodes, each section is about 10 cm long, leave a leaf at the top, then cut off some leaflets, insert 2 nodes into the soil, and leave the upper node with leaflets outside the soil, with a plant spacing of 10 cm × 10 cm.

Post-insertion management

Use a fine-meshed watering can to water the cuttings once after they are grafted. Water thoroughly to allow close contact between the cuttings and the substrate. An arch is built on the bed surface, covered with plastic film, and then covered with straw mats to create a semi-shaded environment. Control the temperature at around 25℃. If the temperature is too high, proper ventilation and cooling should be carried out to keep the bed soil moist. It will take about 40 days for the roots to take root, and then the greenhouse film and straw mats can be gradually removed. It can be transplanted and planted in the spring of the second year, and it will bloom in the same year.
