How to grow bougainvillea so that it blooms more?

Bougainvillea is loved for its affordable price and charming flower appearance. It can bloom all year round, but many novice flower lovers find it difficult to make bougainvillea bloom when caring for it. However, as long as you master the key points, even a novice can make bougainvillea bloom multiple times a year, with each flowering period lasting for several months. Let’s learn how to grow bougainvillea so that it blooms more.

1. Choose the right variety

There are many varieties of bougainvillea with different colors of flowers. If you want bougainvillea to bloom frequently, it is crucial to choose the variety. Some varieties such as green leaf big red, green leaf water red, and small leaf purple have fewer flowers and are not suitable for beginners. On the contrary, varieties such as Angus bloom diligently and are more suitable for beginners.

2. Use small pots and breathable soil

In order to promote the flowering of bougainvillea, water needs to be properly controlled. Use small pots and well-aerated soil, and avoid using deep pots, which is the basis for ensuring flowering.

3. Adequate lighting

Bougainvillea is a light-loving plant. No matter which variety, it needs plenty of sunlight to promote flowering. The lighting time needs to be at least six hours. If it can reach more than eight hours, it will be more conducive to continuous flowering.

4. Reasonable fertilization

The choice of fertilizer is crucial to the flowering of bougainvillea. If the bougainvillea has not yet bloomed, you can use potassium dihydrogen phosphate to promote it. If you want Bougainvillea to continue blooming, you should choose a fertilizer with high phosphorus content and balanced nutrition, such as Huaduoduo No. 2, to promote flower bud differentiation while ensuring branch growth.

5. Moderate water control

Water control is the key to promoting continuous flowering of bougainvillea. Place the plant in full sun with well-aerated soil and a small pot. After the soil is dry, observe the condition of the leaves and water them only when they begin to droop or wilt. During the water control process, continue to fertilize at the normal frequency. About a month later, new buds will appear with flower buds. At this time, stop controlling the water and keep the soil in the pot half dry and water it thoroughly to promote the growth of flower buds and continued flowering of branches.

Following the above steps, even if the bougainvillea does not bloom, as long as the temperature remains above 15 degrees, the bougainvillea can bloom all year round, and blooming multiple times a year will no longer be a problem.
