How to propagate daffodils

Side ball breeding

Lateral bulb propagation is the most commonly used propagation method for daffodils. The storage bulbs attached to both sides of the bulb are only connected to the mother bulb at the base and can easily separate from the mother bulb. They are usually separated from the mother bulb in autumn and then planted separately, and new bulbs will be produced in the second year.

Side shoot propagation

Lateral buds are those buds that are enclosed inside the bulb.

When the bulbs are castrated, they will be separated from the mother body along with the broken scales that are dug out, and then the white buds are picked out and sown on the seedbed in autumn, and new bulbs will be produced the following year.

Double scale reproduction

Double scale propagation refers to the use of a bulb disk with two scales as propagation material. This method of propagation has a high bulb formation rate and can be carried out in all seasons, with the best period being April to September. There are many side buds inside a bulb, some of which are clearly visible while others are more hidden. But usually there are two scales and one bud.

The specific operations are as follows:

First, place the bulbs in a low temperature environment for about 4-8 weeks, then cut the bulb disks into small pieces at room temperature, retaining two scales on each piece. At the same time, cut off the upper ends of the scales, leaving 2 cm as breeding material. Prepare a plastic bag and put vermiculite with 50% water content or sand with 6% water content in it. Then put the breeding material in it, seal the bag and place it in a dark place at 20-28℃. Small bulbs will grow after about 2 or 3 months.

Tissue culture

This method requires high standards and professionalism and is not suitable for home use.
