How to trim Dutch iron

Dutch Iron Pruning Reasons

The leaves of Dutch iron tend to age and turn yellow easily, or become too tall, become weak and droop, or develop leaf spot under high temperature and high humidity conditions. In this case, the leaves should be cut off. On the one hand, it prevents the disease from spreading, and on the other hand, it makes the shape beautiful. Dutch iron has a strong germination ability, so whether it is a stake type or a whole plant type, pruning is still necessary.

Dutch Iron Pruning Time

Pruning after winter

This is because the weather is colder in winter and there are fewer bacteria and pests, so the pruned branches and leaves are not easily infected by pests and diseases. When pruning, you can cut off the dead old Dutch iron leaves, diseased leaves with insects, or relatively dense leaves from the bottom of the Dutch iron to the top, and try to keep some good old leaves.

Pruning before Qingming

At this time, the Dutch iron is still in the stage of recovery and growth. The wounds after cutting off the dead and diseased leaves are easy to heal, and the occurrence of diseases and pests can also be reduced.

Dutch Iron Pruning Considerations

Pay attention to disinfection

When trimming Dutch iron, pay attention to the cross-section should be slightly slanted downward, do not cut it flat, this is to prevent rain soaking. After cutting, do not spray water on the wound of the Dutch iron. If conditions permit, you can use wax or red paint to paint the cut to prevent bacteria or insect pests from causing Dutch iron rot.

Reduce watering

The Dutch iron must be well managed before pruning to allow it to accumulate more nutrients, which can also ensure the sprouting of more branches. It should also be placed in a place with good light for photosynthesis.

After all the branches and leaves of the Dutch iron have been pruned, you don't need to water it too frequently. Wait until new leaves grow out, then gradually increase the amount of fertilizer and water or manage it normally.
