Earthworms are a common creature in fertile soil, also known as "earth dragons". They are a type of Chinese medicinal material . The market prospects for earthworms are broad and they are artificially cultivated in many areas. So how often should you water earthworms? Let’s learn more about it below.

How often should you water earthworms?

The water content in earthworms' bodies is about 80%, and they like moisture. In order to ensure their normal growth, they need to be watered frequently, but not waterlogged. They should be watered every day when the weather is hot, once every 3 days when it is cool, and once every 10 days during the low temperature period. The watering time is noon in winter, evening in summer, and daytime in spring and autumn.

Things to note when raising earthworms

1. Shading

Earthworms hide during the day and come out at night. They can be seen foraging under the moonlight. The breeding beds should be covered with straw to keep them moist and shaded.

2. Temperature

The growth temperature of earthworms is 18-25℃, and the hatching of its eggs is also related to temperature. Therefore, when breeding earthworms artificially, it is necessary to control the temperature so that the earthworms can reproduce all year round.

3. Humidity

Earthworms like moisture, and large-scale breeding should choose high and dry terrain, pollution-free, good drainage capacity, and no continuous abnormal noises. Generally, the relative humidity of the culture medium and the substrate is best maintained at 60~70%.

4. pH

According to experimental tests, the most suitable pH for the growth and reproduction of earthworms is 7.4~7.6. When the pH of the base material is higher than 7.8 or lower than 5.9, the earthworms will be seriously unable to adapt, grow and reproduce slowly, and have very low yields. Earthworms grow and reproduce more appropriately in a neutral to alkaline base material (pH 7.1), and the pH of the feed is most suitable at around 7.5.

5. Prevent natural enemies

The natural enemies of earthworms include frogs , mice, toads, mole crickets , ants, etc. Small-mesh fish nets can be placed around the earthworm farm for prevention. In addition, methods such as capture can be used to prevent natural enemies.
