How to grow geranium in winter

How to grow geranium in winter

Temperature control and light preservation

Geraniums like warmth and are afraid of cold. To avoid frostbite, necessary anti-cold measures should be taken in winter. Control the room temperature at 15~20 ℃ and not lower than 10 ℃ at night. If the temperature is low, the plant will grow weakly, flower buds will differentiate slowly, and there will be few or even no flowers. But the temperature cannot be higher than 25 ℃, which will affect its growth.

Usually place the flower pot in front of a sunny window to allow it to receive sufficient sunlight. If there is insufficient light, the plant will grow wildly, which will also affect flowering. In severe cases, it will cause the flower buds to wither and affect flowering in the second year.

Water and fertilizer are appropriate

Geraniums are afraid of moisture and are drought-tolerant. Water evaporates slowly in winter, so watering should be done with caution. Normally, water the plant once every 5 to 7 days and keep the soil in the pot slightly dry. Pay attention to the water temperature when watering, and do not make it too cold. If you water too much in winter, it will cause leaves to fall off, flower buds to grow poorly, and even root rot and death. Spray the leaves with clean water every day to keep them clean so that they can carry out photosynthesis and accumulate nutrients.

In order for geraniums to bloom in winter, they need to be provided with adequate nutrients. Apply thin liquid fertilizer once every 10 days, or water with fermented rice water.

Pruning and topping

In order to encourage geraniums with more branches to bloom more, the plants should be topped several times, and lightly topped before flowering to promote more branching and bud formation. When flowering in winter, it is necessary to cut off the withered flowers in time, and cut off the dead and thin branches to avoid consuming too much nutrients. However, in winter, when temperatures are lower, pruning should be light to prevent the plants from recovering more slowly.
