How to grow peony

How to water

The peony has drought-resistant fleshy roots and is afraid of waterlogging, so water it in moderation, water it thoroughly, and water it again when it is dry. In sunny weather in spring, summer and autumn, water it every 1-2 days, and every 3 to 5 days on cloudy days. Always keep the soil in the pot half moist to ensure favorable growth. Too much moisture will easily cause root rot, and too dryness will cause poor growth and yellow leaves. When entering the winter dormancy period, the potting soil should be relatively dry and slightly moist.

How to fertilize

Peony likes fertilizer. When transplanting or changing the soil, it is advisable to add some decomposed organic fertilizer or nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium compound fertilizer to the culture soil. Apply a thin nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium liquid fertilizer once every 10-15 days during the growing period to ensure that it has lush branches and leaves. Stop fertilizing after the flower buds show color, and do not fertilize during the dormant period.

Suitable light

The peony is native to northern my country. It prefers a semi-shaded environment with sufficient scattered light. It is cold-resistant, but afraid of high temperatures and strong light. Therefore, it is suitable for cultivation under large trees in the courtyard, on the shady side of tall buildings, and on east- or north-facing balconies. During the dormant period, place it in a shady place away from light, and sprinkle water on the nearby ground frequently to increase the surrounding air humidity and lower the temperature.

Breeding temperature

Peony should avoid high temperature and prolonged rain, as high temperature will cause the leaves to dry and the roots to rot. In the hot summer, you can move the potted peonies to the shade of the seedling shed, or bury them in the soil to maintain good drainage and ventilation. Spray water around them on sunny days to increase the air humidity and ensure water supply during the peony flower bud differentiation period. Pay attention to drainage in the rainy season, and tip the pots over in rainy weather to prevent water accumulation in the pots.
